Common print resolutions are 300 DPI for high-quality prints, but this can vary depending on the printing method and viewing distance. My standard output is 300 DPI.

File Size:

The file size is the amount of digital data the image file occupies on a storage device. It is measured in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), etc. The file size is influenced by the dimensions of the image in pixels and the image’s color depth (bit depth).

Print Size and Resolution:

To calculate the pixel dimensions, you can use the formula: Pixels = Inches × DPI. The higher print resolution requires more pixels to maintain detail, leading to larger image files.
Example: A 5×7 print at 300 DPI would be 1500 x 2100 pixels.

File Size and Pixel Dimensions:

Larger pixel dimensions generally result in larger file sizes. The color depth (8-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit, etc.) also affects file size. I typically output files in 8-bit color depth but for fine arts I output in 16-bit color depth.

File Size and Compression:

Compression techniques (like JPEG compression) can significantly reduce file size but may lead to some loss of image quality. However, in everyday printing, the loss of image quality is quite negligible.

Why Do I Choose 5×7 Resolution For Digital Image Delivery?

I believe that delivering digital images in a 5×7 resolution meets everyday printing requirements. This size is particularly suitable for creating cards adorned with photos or generating additional loose prints for various purposes, such as school projects.

While 5×7 is my preferred choice for routine needs, I acknowledge the importance of maintaining control over larger prints.
